earth: foundation
Earth supports all that exists, according to Confucian philosophers. Actually, Confucius himself highly regarded Li, or propriety, as the basis for successful governance; one may be very virtuous and act with a good intention, but if their manner is utterly strange and unpredictable to others, that fact may remain invisible. In the global economy, Japan has suffered high transaction costs here and there due to structural mismatch from the rest of the world; what has been missing is indeed a common "ground".
Gold: direction
After gold or elixir went medieval alchemists, all the way; many sacrificed their wealth, some their health, a few their life. Whether the objective is material or somatic is a secondary matter here. Enterprise, small or big, needs a clear mission. La raison d'être. This is the “WHY” of Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle. “More profits” — that’s good. But if that is the ultimate goal, your team has to come up with “HOWs” and “WHATs” anew all the time. But if you have an eternal “WHY”, the rest will naturally flow.
water: moderation
If Earth is Confucius, Water of course is Lao Tsu. This is definitely the most nuanced element of the quintet — its lack would lead to Tree withering; too much of it can extinguish Fire. But the right amount of it will moist Earth nicely, letting it do its job maximally without stifling other elements’ functions. This is mukti that Sadhguru has famously talked about: you can drive a car without the oil but the engine will break down before long. In other words, Water is the key determinant of sustainability.
fire: innovation
From melting ores to generating steam, Fire has driven technological shifts. While adaptation allows evolution, innovation instigates revolution. Fire changes the game through the process Joseph Schumpeter called creative destruction. This element has caught the special attention of the public in the first quarter of this century. Just as adaptation needs to be carefully considered for innovation, innovation in turn is required for adaptation — the latter truth is remarkably overlooked.
Tree: adaptation
Trees keep growing, and some do for thousands of years; so do businesses, quite literally — the construction company Kongō Gumi, founded in 578 (yes, 578 Anno Domini), remained financially independent until 2006 and still maintains its brand to this day. Kongo Gumi’s 1,400-year survival is not a miracle of staying static, but an active history of trial and error where they ruthlessly prioritized meritocracy and evolution over rigid business models to weather repeated crises.
